About

KAP Caraïbe is the LGBTQIA+ centre for Martinique, based in Fort-de-France. The name is Creole: Konsey, Aide, Prévansyon, meaning counsel, help, prevention. It has been running since 2012, the year the island saw its first LGBT+ demonstration, a march of about a hundred people that ended with a die-in in one of the pedestrian streets of the city.

The association has its own premises, which house a reception and support unit. A telephone listening line is staffed by volunteers trained by a professional, and covers sexual health, mental health and questions of gender identity. Support also goes to people facing family breakdown or dealing with homophobic attacks.

Alongside that there is a social programme: KAP'Apéro get-togethers, beach days, hikes, talks and film screenings followed by discussion. Workshops run in the association's own space, and the anti-discrimination sessions go into Martinican schools and adult training centres under a programme approved by the Académie de Martinique.

Martinique has no dedicated gay bar or club, so this is where the island's queer community organises and meets.
