Nightclub Mixei opened in January 1990 and is the oldest gay nightclub in Finland still in business. It is also the only one in Tampere and in the wider Pirkanmaa region.
The club runs over two levels. Upstairs is a lounge bar quiet enough to talk in. Downstairs there is a dance floor, a stage and a DJ booth. DJs and live acts play there, and karaoke has a regular slot. The programme takes in theme nights, drag and club events, some of them put on with the regional rainbow association.
It now calls itself a rainbow nightclub rather than a gay bar, and the door is open to the whole LGBTQIA+ community and to the people who come with them. Entry is 18 and over. The house states a zero tolerance policy on discrimination and harassment, and asks anyone who runs into trouble to speak to any member of staff.
The address is on Itsenäisyydenkatu, a few minutes on foot from the railway station, with a tram stop outside the door. Mixei began on Otavalankatu and moved here in 2004, when it passed from the local Seta association into private hands.
