Bøssehuset is the queer culture house in Christiania and is almost as old as Christiania itself. The barracks were occupied in 1971 and a group of gay men moved into the building called Karlsvognen in 1973. They are still there.
It is a house rather than a bar: theatre, concerts, exhibitions, talks and parties, run by volunteers, in a garden the neighbourhood calls the Bøssehave. The programme runs from a summer party and a garden show to a political drag contest, and the regular open evenings are the closest it gets to a fixed opening.
Anyone can volunteer, on the bar, on the technical side or on the events. It is a walk into Christiania to find, and that is part of it.
