UniQue is the rainbow house for the province of Flemish Brabant, a volunteer-run centre and bar for LGBTQI+ people on Leuvensestraat in Kessel-Lo, a few minutes' walk behind Leuven station. It moved into this building in June 2023, after its old house on the Diestsesteenweg was expropriated for road works.
BAR UniQue is the social heart of the place. Volunteers run the bar, there is an indoor terrace, and anyone is welcome for a drink and a chat. The house treats the whole building as a safer space and does not accept discrimination.
Around the bar there are meeting and activity rooms, a media library that lends LGBTQIA+ books and films, and a reception service where people can come in for a personal conversation about sexual orientation or gender identity. Groups can hire the rooms.
UniQue is also the umbrella for around two dozen associations in the province, many of them based in Leuven: the youth group &of, a student group, a choir, a volleyball and badminton club, and groups for lesbian and bisexual women, for non-binary people and for older gay and bisexual men. Several of them host their own café evenings at the bar, and the house takes part in Leuven Pride.
