The Hessenhuis is a warehouse finished in 1564, between the MAS museum and the red-light district, and since 1993 the ground floor has been Antwerp's best known gay bar. The building has been put to a long list of uses over four centuries; this is the one that stuck.
The interior is modern rather than historical, the terrace is large, and the room fills with a young and mixed crowd from early evening. DJs take over on Friday and Saturday nights, and the bar runs drag brunches and live performances alongside the ordinary week.
It calls itself the embassy of freedom, which is more or less how the city treats it: everybody ends up here at some point in an Antwerp night.
