forty nine is the queer bar of the Linz LGBT association, on the ground floor of the association's centre a few minutes from the main station. It opened in April 2018, after volunteers took over a run-down bar on the site and rebuilt it. The bar team is still unpaid.
The room is small and holds a stage with its own lighting and sound rig, which is what makes the programme possible. A drag series runs through the year, and there are karaoke nights, pub quizzes, drag bingo, a fetish Stammtisch, readings, a queer comedy night and a watch party when the Eurovision final is on. The bar is also the home of the association's youth group. Around Linz Pride it is one of the fixed points in the city.
The crowd is queer and mixed across ages, and the place works as a community room as much as a night out. Tables can be reserved by mail, members of the association pay less for their drinks, and the rainbow merchandise the association sells is available over the counter here.
